There are currently 50 million victims of modern slavery worldwide, with 27.6 million trapped in forced labour. According to the International Labour Organization, 39.4% of those trapped in forced labour are women and girls (4.9 million in forced commercial sexual exploitation)(ILO, 2022). On a global scale, 35% of women experience some form of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime but in the developing world, that figure may increase to as high as 70%. Most of these cases are never reported to authorities and most survivors of gender based violence and sex trafficking harbor the stigma of their abuse in pain, shame and silence.
