BENIN CITY, EDO STATE. On the 19th of September 2024, Pathfinders organized a transformative wellness therapy event for thirty-five (35) ‘Project Restore’ beneficiaries. This event took place following all beneficiaries’ counseling sessions to support their recovery from trauma.
Upon arrival, all beneficiaries received a warm welcome and an introduction to the curated activities to facilitate relaxation and self-expression. Beneficiaries found peace in movement and stillness exercises, reconnecting with their bodies. During the music therapy session, they quietly relaxed and used music to express many of their underlying emotions which had been unprocessed.
An experienced counsellor and wellness coach discussed mental health, self-care and resilience. She helped create an environment of trust and understanding, encouraging participants to share their stories if they felt comfortable doing so. The conversations fostered a sense of community, reminding our survivors that they aren’t alone. Following the event, many of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect and heal in such a supportive environment. Several described how the event helped them regain hope and agency, reinforcing the importance of community in healing. They each received water, fruits and snacks.
‘Project Restore’ is funded by a grant from the United States Department of State, to which we are grateful. The opinions, findings, and conclusions presented are Pathfinders Justice Initiative’s and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United States Department of State.
